In India, many companies prioritize quick hiring over thorough background checks due to tight timelines and cost-cutting measures. Low-ranking Admin or HR employees often conduct reference and employment checks by contacting the candidates previous employer based on oral information provided by the candidate. Feedback is received orally, and minimal notes are scribbled on the resume to complete the checks. Surprisingly, 90% of organized sector companies perform basic background checks, while a staggering 95% of unorganized sector companies hire without any background checks. However, industries like IT, ITES, BFSI, and FMCG recognize the importance of employee background screening and invest significantly in it. IT companies like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro have a zero-tolerance policy towards deceptive employees, taking strict disciplinary actions, including termination and blacklisting. Employment discrepancy is a significant portion of the overall discrepancy in companies conducting background screening.
